Dewayne Quayveon Coleman was preliminarily charged with murder and is held in the La Porte County Jail on a $1 million cash bond, the Herald-Dispatch reported Aug. 31. Marcus Ballinger Jr., 19, of Michigan City, was charged with murder in May on the same bond amount, WNDU and WSBT reported. Neither man has been convicted.
Michigan City police responded around 4:30 p.m. May 15 near the 300 block of West 11th Street, ABC57 reported. Porter was found with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Officers gave aid before he was taken to Franciscan Health Michigan City, where he later died, according to ABC57, the Herald-Dispatch, and WNDU.
WNDU said investigators identified Ballinger through witness interviews and evidence review, arrested him in mid-May, and charged him days later. WSBT reported the same wrap.
The Times (Bob Kasarda, Aug. 26) said Coleman became the second person charged. Citing a court filing, Kasarda reported Ballinger told police he did not act alone and that his accomplice — identified by police as Coleman — opened fire as Porter ran toward cover at his house.
Per that affidavit account as summarized by The Times: as the pair entered an alley behind the 300 West block of 11th Street, Coleman saw someone near a rear gate and yelled out; Porter ran toward a house; Ballinger said the other male “began firing multiple rounds.” Ballinger first claimed he fired a single round, then said his handgun discharged multiple rounds with one pull, The Times reported.
When officers reached the house, they were greeted on the front porch by a frantic 11-year-old and directed to a bedroom where Porter lay unconscious and bleeding from the face and torso area, The Times reported. Porter’s sister told police she heard gunfire from the rear, then heard Porter run inside and collapse in her bedroom.
Ballinger initially denied involvement, later saying he lied out of fear and asking about a plea deal and/or relocation, The Times reported. The Herald-Dispatch said detectives also used video and jail inmate phone records; officers set a scene from 11th and Wabash to an alley south of the 300 block, where six cartridge cases were found.
Charges remain pending. Region N3 will update on arraignment dates or amended counts.
