Adrian Paris Jr. was charged Sept. 8, according to Region News Source. Charges are accusations. Paris is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Call for service
Police were called to the Comfort Inn on Sept. 4 about an intoxicated person yelling at employees, court documents state. Paris was allegedly upset he could not get a room and began arguing with hotel staff.
When officers arrived, he was sitting on a bench outside complaining loudly about the lack of a room. An officer explained the hotel was without power and could not sell rooms. Paris allegedly responded with an obscenity, according to the documents as reported by Region News Source.
Escalation
Court documents say Paris stood and moved within a few feet of the officer. Police reported bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, an odor of alcohol and a belligerent attitude.
He allegedly refused orders to sit back down. When told again to sit while more officers were on the way, he told the officer he “should get backup officers,” the affidavit summary states.
Believing Paris was about to resist, the officer shoved him in the chest with both hands to create space, causing Paris to fall backward, the documents state.
Struggle and booking
Paris allegedly refused repeated commands to put his hands behind his back, tucked his arms under his stomach, rolled on the ground and flailed his arms while the officer tried to handcuff him.
A second officer arrived. Paris was eventually handcuffed. He continued cursing at officers after being warned about disorderly conduct, according to the affidavit summary.
Police observed swelling under Paris’ right eye and scrapes on his head. EMS took him to a hospital for medical clearance before he was booked into the Porter County Jail.
The officer later sought treatment for hand pain and learned the hand was fractured — an injury court documents allege occurred during the struggle with Paris.
